Vocalist, pianist, percussionist, composer and arranger Susan Pereira has been one of the most versatile musicians on several of New York’s musical scenes since 1982, equally at home in the genres of Brazilian, Jazz and Jewish music. In the Jewish world, Susan played piano for Congregation B’nai Jeshurun (NYC) at High Holiday services from 2003 through 2018, and was a long-time member of the congregation. Since 2022 she has been the High Holiday cantorial soloist and pianist at the Reform Synagogue of Putnam Valley (RTPV). She has also played for Shabbat and/or other holiday services at RTPV, BJ, Stephen Wise Free Synagogue (NYC), Congregation Habonim (NYC), Temple Emanu-El (Edison, NJ), and Temple B’nai Abraham (Livingston, NJ).

Susan has performed (piano and/or voice) with Alicia Svigals, Adrienne Cooper, Steve Dropkin and Jules Frankel, and has sung with the Shalom Singers a cappella ensemble since 2000. Her original composition for Psalm 96 (“Shiru L’Adonai”) was selected for inclusion in the 2013 Shalshelet International Festival of New Jewish Liturgical Music, as well as the Festival’s Songbook and CD. At the invitation of Shalshelet’s organizers, Susan performed the song at the Festival’s finale in Miami.

Combining her jazz training with intensive immersion in traditional Brazilian music and culture has enabled Susan to develop a distinct musical personality. Fluent in Portuguese, she is a singer who blends a silky, rich tone with superior vocal technique and is a particularly skilled lyric interpreter and scat singer. Her percussive piano style is enhanced by her mastery of complex Brazilian rhythms and her original Brazilian jazz compositions are a popular part of her performances. She leads the acclaimed Brazilian jazz group Sabor Brasil, co-founded with drummer Vanderlei Pereira, and has appeared with the group at a variety of notable festivals and venues, including Lincoln Center, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, the Jazz in June Festival (Lincoln, Nebraska), the Savannah Jazz Festival, the Hartford Jazz Festival, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), Dizzy’s Club (JALC), Iridium, Birdland, Jazz Forum, B.B. King’s and the Zinc Bar, among many others.
Apart from Sabor Brasil, Susan is the vocalist and percussionist in the Brazilian jazz ensemble Vanderlei Pereira and Blindfold Test, which has performed at Dizzy’s Club (JALC), among many other clubs and festivals, as well as major concert venues in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil. She has performed as a vocalist and/or percussionist with many other top names in Brazilian jazz as well as in traditional samba percussion ensembles in the U.S., Brazil, and beyond, at venues such as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Blue Note, the Jazzmandu Festival (in Katmandu, Nepal), the Syracuse Jazz Festival, the Village Gate and Rio de Janeiro’s Sambódromo.
