Phil Feinberg, “Gefilte Fisherman,” dies at 68
The “Oldest Jewish Lifeguard” at Orchard Beach died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 (27 Kislev 5774). Philip J. Feinberg was lovingly called “Gefilte Fisherman” because he often brought chopped fish to onegs when sabbath services were community-led.
We will miss our dear friend, memorable storyteller, enthusiastic and kind teacher, sailor, fisherman and dreamer. And yes, he was the longest working lifeguard at Orchard Beach — 50 years since he turned 17!
Philip’s funeral service was conducted by Rabbi Shohama at the
Ballard-Durand Funeral Home in White Plains. His burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hawthorne was officiated by Reb David.
